Online preparation for Cambridge English will have everybody speaking

November 25, 2011

University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) has launched a new, interactive web-based learning solution to help students prepare for the speaking part of the Cambridge English: First exam.

Cambridge ESOL’s Online Speaking Practice incorporates video footage of a real Cambridge ESOL examiner asking authentic exam questions. Students can record and share their answers with teachers and friends – and then compare their responses to videos of students giving sample answers.

“Online speaking preparation gives students a really great opportunity to practice their speaking skills," explains Cambridge ESOL’s Christine Nuttall. “Speaking is a very complex skill and often presents many challenges for the learner. We’ve used videos of real examiners to create as authentic an experience as possible for people preparing for the speaking test of Cambridge English: First.”

Online Speaking Practice covers the four different parts of the Cambridge English: First speaking test. It includes feedback on sample answers, useful tips from the examiner and information on how speaking tests are assessed on exam day. Cambridge English: First is at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – an internationally recognised benchmark of language ability. Christine Nuttall explains:

“Cambridge English: First is an ideal exam for people who need to use everyday written and spoken English for work and study purposes. It’s often used as a stepping stone to higher level tests such as Cambridge English: Advanced.”

Cambridge ESOL plan to extend the range of Online Speaking Practice to other Cambridge English exams in 2012.

ALTs work in public schools, assisting the Japanese teachers, and helping to provide a positive and energetic experience through English for the students.

Gifu city, a beautiful city of some 400,000 people on the Nagara river, is conveniently located just 20 minutes north of Nagoya city with easy access to both the city and the mountains. There is also a solid community of more than 20 ALTs already working there which will definitely help the transition and provide ongoing support. These Gifu city positions offer slightly less money per month as a result of balancing slightly longer holiday periods and fewer working days per year.

Most of our ALT positions are in prefectures such as Aichi, Shizuoka, Gifu, Mie and Shiga in central Japan, as well as other positions south of here in Osaka, Okayama and Hiroshima prefectures. Our ALT positions offer the opportunity to join a great company and experience working in the public school system. You get a chance to learn and use the Japanese language on a daily basis, to experience and appreciate cultural differences, and most importantly to be positively involved with the development of young children.

If you have the desire to accept this type of responsibility, please contact ALTIA CENTRAL. We offer a stable, reliable and professional support system and our ALTs enjoy a comprehensive benefits package including generous, fully-paid vacation periods. We also provide excellent teacher training, an amazing array of educational resources, apartments and other benefits. Please visit our website at http://recruiting.altmoot.com/ for further details on benefits and support and more about our organization and which areas we operate in.

The successful applicants should be available to for Orientation/Training for 3 days in early January, on the 5th, 6th and 7th, and be ready to visit the BOE and start school the following week.

They must be flexible, enjoy working with young children, and be motivated to go the extra mile to provide a positive experience for their students. A strong desire to live and work in Japan, good Japanese language skills, and teaching experience with young learners is also highly recommended. A minimum BA/BS degree is required, and a degree in a relevant field such as Japanese, Japanese History, East Asian Studies, Linguistics and the like are particularly useful though not absolutely necessary.

*Please understand that only applicants considered for interview will be contacted and that we do not have any positions in or near the greater Tokyo area.

Kindergarten Teacher

We are seeking full-time native English speaking kindergarten classroom teachers, to start April 1st. Sunnyside International Kindergarten provides an English and Japanese bilingual environment to children from 3 to 6 years old, as well as after-school English classes for interested kindergarten students and elementary aged graduates.

Foreign teachers are responsible for their own class that they team teach with a Japanese partner teacher. They also work as part of a team with the other teachers in their class age group, so we are looking for teachers who are able to work closely with another teacher and as part of a larger team, as well as being able to commit to teaching the same class throughout an entire year.

Teachers will also be required to teach after school classes independently to graduates of the kindergarten, so applicants with experience in teaching elementary aged students will be highly regarded.
Working at our kindergarten is a deeply rewarding experience, but one that requires a higher level of maturity, responsibility, work ethic, and commitment than many other English teaching jobs in Japan.

Applicants should be available to visit the kindergarten for a full-day working interview, and be able to attend some training before commencing employment. Candidates who are unable to visit the school for a working interview, need not apply, as it is a crucial step in the interview process. The kindergarten is located in an outlying suburb of Gifu city.

Ideal applicants would have experience working with young children and be able to demonstrate a high level of ability, creativity, and enthusiasm in this field. Preferred applicants will hold an international or Japanese drivers license or be able to acquire one. Visa sponsorship is available to those holding a bachelors degree.

Depending on availability, subsidized, furnished apartments and lease cars will be provided for new teachers. There are also bonuses available on top of the regular monthly salary, with increases based on performance. Approximately 7 weeks of paid vacation that correspond with kindergarten vacation times (summer, winter, spring), and 5 days of personal leave are also provided.

Applicants should send a cover letter explaining why you are interested in this position, along with a resume, photo, and two references. Only applicants who meet these requirements will be contacted.
