Japanese student impresses judges at English speaking competition at Cambridge University

July 31, 2012

Teaching-English-in-Japan-Education-REPLACE" A talented university student from Japan recently came runner up in the 2012 Cambridge English speaking competition at Cambridge University earlier this month.

Minami Yamamoto – who majors in business administration at Sophia University in Tokyo - was one of nine young English language students from across Asia who was flown to the UK to take part in the final of the Best Young Speaker from Asia competition.

The final was held at Robinson College, Cambridge on 5 July and Minami and the other contestants gave two presentations in English and answered a series of questions put to them by an expert panel. Minami told the event organisers that being involved in the contest was a wonderful experience and said she was impressed by the motivation of the other contestants. She also said she’d liked to be seen as a role model for Japanese women who go abroad for their careers.

Simon Wright, from competition organisers University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) said:

"Minami proved she could use spoken English to a really high level and her performance in the final was very impressive. This level of skill will be a big help to her when she enters the workplace and I wish her all the best."

The winner of the Best Young Speaker from Asia competition was Sruthi Vijayachandran from India who won the first prize of an MBA scholarship from one of the event’s sponsors the London School of Business Finance.

ELT for Tohoku donate 1.6 million yen to NGOs

July 02, 2012

On June 29 2012, representatives of the ELT for Tohoku consortium officially handed over two 800,000 yen cheques to Ashinaga and Living Dreams, two NGOs supporting orphans in the Tohoku area and elsewhere in Japan. The money was raised by ELT for Tohoku – a group of ELT publishers and distributors in Japan, who decided to combine efforts in May 2011 following the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster on March 11 2011.

Teaching-English-in-Japan-Education-REPLACE" (click to enlarge) Handover of the donation cheque on June 29 2012 to Living Dreams in Shibuya, Tokyo.
From left to right: Rie Watanabe (Living Dreams), Karl O'Callaghan (OUP), Mikiko Matsumoto (Living Dreams), Alastair Lamond (Englishbooks.jp), Brendan Delahunty (Pearson), Akiko McDougall (mpi), Matthias Reich (ELTBOOKS.com), Chiharu Takano (Cengage), Ayako Kondoh (McGraw-Hill) and Gandhi (Living Dreams).

Over the course of the following year, participating publishers, among them Pearson Kirihara, Oxford University Press, and Macmillan, donated more than 17,000 books, which have been sold to teachers and schools in Japan at events and by online textbook distributors ELTBOOKS.com and Englishbooks.jp. 100% of sales of donated books was then forwarded to Ashinaga and Living Dreams.

"While interest in the Tohoku area has certainly been waning over the past few months, we still hope to raise more money by selling donated books to teachers in Japan. We have many more books left, and purchasing those books helps both sides – teachers who can buy material for less then usual, and the two NGOs trying to help children in the Tohoku area," said Matthias Reich, president of ELT Services Japan Ltd., representing ELTBOOKS.com in the consortium.

In a press release the University recognized Murphy's contribution to ELT but also honoured him for -- through his grammar books -- being "a quite exceptional humanitarian". 40% of Universities Mull Shifting Aademic Year
More than 40 percent of the national universities are warming to the University of Tokyo plan to shift the start of the undergraduate academic year from spring to fall, a survey found.

"Only" 11% of Japanese Middle School Students Want to Get a Job Using English
The Daily Yomiuri reports: "Seventy percent of middle school students think English ability would be useful for obtaining a job in the future, but only 11 percent want to get a job that requires English, according to an education ministry institute survey, with 43 percent asserting, "I don't want to get a job that requires English skills," up from 36 percent in the previous survey.Kenji Miyauchi, head of the research and development section at the institute's Curriculum Research Center, said, "[Students] are keenly aware of the importance of English in this age of globalization, but at the same time, they don't seem to want to study English or they think it's troublesome to do so."

Clearly the students haven't been made aware of the dire consequences of not speaking English as outlined in the following story...

Megan Fox and Mike Tyson selling English in Brazil
Transformers star Megan Fox, and boxing bad boy Mike Tyson team up to explain to the youth of Brazil the consequences of having the atttitudes of their Japanese counterparts in this interesting video sponsored by an English school chain.

Yes, English is Crazy
If you think English school ads are weird, then blame it on the language. A poem makes the rounds:

Let’s face it – English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;
Neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren’t invented in England.
We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes,
We find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square,
And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

and much more...

Elementary Language Arts & Science Teachers

Cambridge International School Tokyo is a new school based in Sakura Shinmachi (near Shibuya) on the Denen-Toshi line. We are committed to educating young people to meet life as a whole. Our philosophy is where one learns about the totality, the wholeness of life. Academic excellence is absolutely necessary, but equal importance is also given to an ongoing inquiry into the way we live our daily lives. All aspects of our curriculum embody our philosophy to foster critical reasoning and discussion in key discourses while at the same time establishing a critical awareness of the activities that we are engaged in. This underlying framework provides a means to establish not only a mastery of the principles and practice of rigorous and logically informed reasoning in the individual disciplines themselves, but is part of an inquiry that extends beyond the mastery of the technical skills required of today’s world to an intelligence born of observation and self-knowing.

Our curriculum is largely based upon Cambridge University`s curriculum frameworks; Cambridge Primary for elementary school, Cambridge Secondary 1 & 2 for middle school and Cambridge Advanced for high school. However we also incorporate other curriculums that aid the learning experience of the students so we are not exclusively based upon one curriculum. We incorporate NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) for our early education program for example, as well as Advanced Placement for high school.

We also develop our own learning programs that are not familiar features at other schools. For example, we aim to run creative writing courses and reading clubs that develop students' abilities to read and think critically so as to increase student comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills. These courses are intended to develop stronger analytical thinking skills and establish a critical awareness of thought through structured discussion. Students also learn to actively participate as effective listeners and contributors.

We also place a lot of emphasis on science education because as science and technology become more advanced their results have closer implications in people's lives. It is necessary therefore for everyone to have a minimum grounding in science so as to properly interpret and evaluate the relation between science and technology and society. Such grounding includes not only knowledge about science, but also what is called having a "scientific mind," such as the attitude of having curiosity and doubt about various matters, and the ability to think and judge scientifically and rationally.

Our goal is to instil in the learner the belief that by their own reasoning they develop a marvellous tool, not only for the understanding of the material they are studying but a lifelong tool for rational and clear thinking. Our teachers therefore, impart not only the significance of science to children but teach the fun of science through experiments, etc., to children full of curiosity thereby developing creativity. We take care to get children to feel intellectual interest in science and to enable them to realize the importance of science and its implications in daily life as well as guiding those children already displaying excellent abilities in science and mathematics so that they can further develop such abilities.
