Senior Trade Adviser - Space, Cyber Security and Emerging Technologies ‹ British Embassy - 駐日英国大使館 ‹ Japan Guide - 2015


This is an exciting opportunity for a export promotion professional to work at the heart of the British Embassy in Tokyo to conduct research and to deliver support services for British companies seeking to trade in or with Japan

The purpose of the British Embassy (BE) in Tokyo/British Consulate General (BCG) in Osaka is to promote the British Government’s prosperity, security and consular interests in Japan. UK Trade & Investment Japan (UKTI) is central to the first of these objectives: we support UK companies with practical and tailored advice on how to reach the opportunities in Japan; and we build strong relationships with potential Japanese Investors in order to persuade them that the UK is the destination of choice when investing overseas.


The purpose of this role is to:


- Support the expansion of both the volume and value of UKTI Japan’s services to potential and current British exporters in the Space, Cyber Security and Emerging Technology sectors


- Lead the sector team’s operational delivery work including by example with free and charged business services (such as introductions to prospective partners, production of market intelligence reports and managing visits and events)


Main Duties


The main duties of this role are to:


- Report on Japanese policy and plans in the Space and Cyber Security sectors in consultation with Embassy Science and Technology and Political Section colleagues, with particular reference to the opportunities they present for UK companies;


- Develop and maintain contacts with Japanese companies in the Space and Cyber Security sectors with the aim of identifying business opportunities;


- Gather and present information about UK capabilities in the Space and Cyber Security Sectors;


- Identify other emerging sectors or technologies that would benefit from a strategic or campaign led approach;


- Delivery of client facing services, including face-to-face or telephone briefings, production of market intelligence reports, build an online system of “Business Opportunities” and webinars (online broadcasts).


- Generate new business through active pipeline management and horizon scanning of demand and supply.


- Be first point of contact for UK customers in these sectors


- Ensure honest but tactful evidence based analysis emanates from across the team


- Help implement a robust process for post-support evaluation and follow-up, including identifying and capturing so-called “Business Wins” (a measure of real-world outcomes as reported by the clients themselves).


- Secure sponsorships through self or others


- Deputise on input to policy


- As the digital lead within the Strategic Trade team, identify and introduce ways of working digitally which increase the impact of the sector team’s work, in particular by providing a regular stream of content and content opportunities to “Export to Japan”, an online portal


- Ensure compliance with UKTI and FCO Knowledge, Information Management policies and procedures.


- Play a full part in the corporate management of the British Embassy and in crisis preparedness activities


Requirements


The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following key skills or experience:


• Fluent spoken and written Japanese: JLTP Level N1 or equivalent with at least 3 years experience of working in a Japanese speaking environment.



• Fluent spoken and written English: TOEIC 850+ points/IELTS Band 8.5 or above with significant experience working in an English speaking environment (a short English language written test will be held at interview)



• Strong IT skills (Microsoft Office)



• At least 3 years experience in a business focussed environment


The following experience or skills are desirable, but not essential:



• Experience or knowledge of space and cyber security sectors


The successful candidate(s) must also be able to demonstrate that they meet the following competences at interview.

Other Details


Work/Life Balance: Verbal communication with British companies is expected on a week to week but not daily basis. This may necessitate calls in the evening, which could be delivered flexibly through Skype or other mobile work or home infrastructure

Benefit package includes:


• The job is being offered on a 1-year contract, subject to annual review



• Working hours: Monday to Friday, generally 0900-1730 with flexible working opportunities and occasional out of hours working required.



• Salary of JPY413,000 per month with 1 month bonus equivalents payable in June and December (Note: Subject to tax status, this amount may be reduced)



• Commuting allowance of up to JPY35,000 per month (paid on an actual cost basis)



• 24 days paid annual leave (calculated pro rata)
