ELS (English Language Support) Instructor ‹ K. International School Tokyo (K. インターナショナルスクール東京) ‹ Japan Guide - 2015
KIST is seeking an ELS (English Language Support) Instructor to join its Secondary School team to support students in Grades 6 through 10 with their English language development during the 2015-2016 academic year commencing August 2015. The instructor is expected to work collaboratively with the ELS team and with classroom teachers to plan and implement activities within the guidelines of the International Baccalaureate’s MYP curriculum framework. A willingness to develop an understanding of the MYP and inquiry-based learning is essential.
The main duties of an ELS Instructor includes:
1) Collaborating with classroom teachers to plan and implement educational programs for students in need of assistance with English language development and, at times, other identified learning areas.
2) Monitoring, assessing and reporting on the language development of students.
3) Assisting the classroom teacher in organizing the learning environment and support systems necessary to promote effective learning for all students.
4) Assessing the English language level of prospective students.
5) Providing instruction to students requiring additional language support or further enrichment as part of the before- and after-school Learning Enhancement Academic Program (LEAP) support classes on certain days during the week, as well as during the summer programs.
6) Performing general student supervisory duties.
Applications will be accepted from persons from any national background; however, native-level fluency in English, including appropriate pronunciation and intonation, is essential. Applicants should have strong interpersonal and communication skills and a proven capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues. In addition, applicants should have a genuine interest in children and should be patient and flexible. IT skills are also essential.
This is a local hire position. Applications will only be accepted from persons currently living in Japan or who have made arrangements to move to Japan.
The initial contract period will commence in August 2015 and continue through June 2016. An opportunity for annual contract renewal may be provided depending on appraised work performance and school needs.
Working hours are from 8:00 to 5:00 with 60 minutes break, Monday through Friday. These hours are non-negotiable. A number of Saturdays are also scheduled as mandatory work days throughout the year for annual school events (working hours may vary). Attendance at a number of evening events during the year may also be required.
