Job Description
The President of OIST seeks to add to his staff an experienced scholar to develop and implement policies regarding recruitment, promotion and review of faculty members and postdoctoral fellows. Work with the Chair of Assembly and the Secretary to the Assembly, to develop the role and support the operation of the Assembly, as the self-governing body of the professoriate. Responsibilities also include managing personnel issues within the Faculty, Research Units and the Science and Technology Group and to manage sabbatical leave for faculty members and oversee visiting academics to the Research Units. Report to and support the activities of the Provost, Vice-CEO, support the President as needed and liaise with the Dean of the Graduate School.
Required Skills
The successful candidate should have a PhD or equivalent degree. Be able to demonstrate an outstanding scholarship, leadership and commitment to educational excellence in a university setting. Proven outstanding record of research in any scientific discipline and at least 5 years’ experience of management in an academic or research environment, either as Head of an Academic Department or a Research Division is needed. Be able to demonstrate leadership in an international or multidisciplinary context, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate staff at all levels and across traditional disciplinary boundaries and be able to respond quickly and flexibly to challenges. For this position it is desirable to have experience of international and institutional peer review and experience of working in an international or multicultural environment. Excellent written and oral English language ability is necessary.
