Summary

We have an immediate need for a Japanese Instructor/coordinator to work in Tokyo, Japan for an Area Studies Immersion course. The course will run from October 14, 2016 through November 4, 2016 and the instructor will need to be local because he/she will need to spend a few days in advance for some course preparation and meetings. The instructor will be living onsite for the duration of the training and will be available for lessons and various course related activities at all times during the day and early evening hours, based on the schedule of activities.


The Japanese Language Instructor shall provide advanced level language and cultural instruction to the students and lead the program extra-curricular activities. Instructor will also assist in program coordination. Position responsibilities include but are not limited to preparing students for their area studies sessions with the Subject Matter Experts; providing classroom instruction (subject matter, language, etc.) in the target language on topics assigned according to program requirements and instructor’s qualifications; facilitating program activities, such as daily area studies sessions, cultural activities and discussions including; and coordinating field trips and accompanying students. More detailed responsibilities will be provided to the selected candidate.


Required Education:


  • Minimum of an undergraduate level education is required

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Native proficiency in the target language and a working proficiency in English to effectively explain complex syntactic structures of the target language

  • Fully knowledgeable of the target culture and current usage of the target language.

  • Familiar with the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) Proficiency Levels and how they relate to proficiency-based instruction

  • Familiar with the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Defense Language Proficiency Tests (DLPT)

  • Competent in task-based methodology, utilizing communicative activities

  • Competent in locating suitable authentic materials and experience in developing proficiency-based training with integrated activities using such materials as newspaper articles or radio broadcasts

  • Combined experience in language education and methodology

  • Experience teaching of adult students at advanced levels.

Preferred Experience and/or qualifications:

  • Experience teaching US Military/Government students

  • Master’s degree

  • Experience in project or program coordination

  • US citizenship

Computer Skills:

  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office Suite.
